We don’t realise it when we’re younger, but the food choices we make through our lives have a huge impact on our overall health, energy levels and quality of life. This becomes even more prevalent as we mature and realise that the ‘handle’ we’ve had on our bodies is no longer working, which eventually brings us to the realisation that it is time to make some changes.
These changes, i.e. food choices, vary greatly from one person to the next and are contingent to our specific goals and priorities. Today, we are looking at the 3 main elements to consider when it comes to what we should be eating and why.
- Muscle mass and bone density. These require foods that are high in protein, which include both animal and plant-based options such as meats, tofu, nuts and seeds, to name a few. A diet that is high in protein helps us maintain muscle mass and bone density which becomes increasingly important as we age. They also fuel our bodies to help us get through strenuous workouts and help them recover during our much-needed rest days. To achieve your goals in this regard, a diet that is high in protein, combined with high resistance training and adequate rest are essential. Furthermore, if you’re looking to lose fat, tone up or simply reset your metabolism, a high protein regiment is definitely the way to go!
- Achieve longevity with better gut health. With various studies confirming that gut health is significantly linked to mental health, it is important to ensure that we consume a diet that is high in fibre and good bacteria. These include incorporating ingredients such as whole grains, nuts, seeds, beans, legumes, leafy greens, fermented vegetables and both pre and pro biotics. If you’re new to this, be sure to start slow, as consuming too much of these ingredients too soon can cause some discomfort and cramping. Instead make small adjustments and work your way up from there. If you’ve recently noticed that you don’t digest food the way you used to, or that you’re constantly feeling bloated and uncomfortable, then maybe a lifestyle that focuses on gut microbiome is exactly what you need right now.
- Feeding your hormones. Have you noticed that certain foods make you feel better at times over others or that your cravings for specific foods are sometimes more intense? Well, did u ever stop to think that maybe your hormones are telling you exactly what they need at any given time. For example, when we PMS, our bodies crave sugar to make up for the lack of energy; so next time, instead of depriving yourself of the fuel your hormones are so desperately seeking, maybe try giving into the cravings instead? Other foods to consider if your goal is healthier/happier hormones: fatty fish, avocados, pumpkin seeds, sweet potatoes, eggs, yogurt and whole grains to name a few. Depending on what stage you’re at in life, eating in accordance to your body’s hormonal needs is a great way to get you feeling vibrant and energetic. Ideally, we should be factoring all three elements into our dietary choices, as they tend to work simultaneously when done correctly. For more clarity, check out our previous blogs on 7 Easy Ways to Increase your Daily Protein Intake and What is Gut Microbiome & Why is it Important?
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, don’t. Ask yourself, what is your priority and work from there. It’s never too late to start and to encourage your family and loved ones to follow suit. In fact, just as an added incentive, studies show that when women eat well, it usually sets the tone for a healthy and balanced household as well.
