Though we’re still only in May, there is no denying that the weather has turned and that it’s starting to feel very much like summer. On that note, we’ve stressed many times on this blog the importance of staying hydrated and its benefits on overall health and well-being.
There is however, only so much water a person can drink. And with the weather fast heating up, staying hydrated is even more essential, and can be done with multiple ingredients, as opposed to just drinking water.
Read on for a list of 18 hydrating foods, most of which are made up of at least 85% water, making them ideal ingredients to add to your summer shopping list.

- Cucumbers: One of the most hydrating fruits and works as an excellent and refreshing add-on to any salad, snack or side dish.
- Iceberg Lettuce: The base of many summer salads and at more than 95% water, this is a great ingredient to have on hand. Also works great as a sandwich filler, or as a wrap in itself if you’re looking to make a low-carb burger or sandwich.
- Romaine Lettuce: A heartier lettuce that is also high in Vitamin C, making it good for your immune system, as well as hydration.
- Celery: Maybe not everyone’s favourite, but it works great for a little added crunch, and goes very well with a side of peanut butter.
- Tomatoes: Not only hydrating, but also high in fibre, making it a great gut friendly choice.
- Courgette: High in antioxidants and great at absorbing flavours, making it an easy add-on to most salads and casseroles.
- Watermelon: Undeniably the king of summer fruits! Pair with a block of feta for your favourite watermelon and feta salad.
- Spinach: Also high in fibre and works great as a salad base. Spinach also wilts very easily, making it an easy add on to most soups and stews.
- Strawberries: Definitely a favourite and perfect as a cool summer snack. Though very enjoyable on its own, strawberries also work great in many salads.
- Cantaloupe: Also rich in Vitamin C, keeping us healthy and hydrated all through summer.
- Melon: Another flavourful summer fruit that is also high in Vitamin C and is up to 89% water.
- Kale: A highly nutritious, hearty leafy green that is high in fibre and works great in salads, soups and stews.
- Broccoli: This vegetable may not be the first thing that comes to mind, but it is actually made up of 89% water and is high in vitamins and antioxidants; great for hydration, immunity and inflammation.
- Peach: A summer fruit that is both refreshing and hydrating. Turn this ingredient into a full-on snack with a side of cottage cheese for a little added protein and delicious-ness.
- Carrots: For those of you who only thought you were just doing your eyes a favour, carrots are actually very high in water content and therefore a great summer ingredient.
- Oranges: High in vitamin C, and also very hydrating, with a water content that is just over 85%. Enjoy as is or treat yourself to a tall fresh glass of orange juice to cool off on a hot day.
- Pineapples: A sweet treat that is also packed full of vitamins. Enjoy fresh out of the fridge as a yummy summer snack!
- Apples: As the saying goes ‘an apple a day…’ – Great on its own, in a salad, paired with cheese or peanut butter, and believe it or not, they’re even great in sandwiches!
