The Significance of Food During Major Sporting Events & the 10 Best Snacks to Serve on Game Day!

The Significance of Snacks During Major Sporting Events

We’ve covered many times here the role food plays in bringing people together, and sporting events are no different. Think about it, what do you most look forward to when going to the cinema or having a movie night at home? The snacks! Though perhaps the same can’t be said for sports’ fans, because let’s face it, when you tune in to watch a game, you’re there for the game! But, whether you’re there in the stadiums or watching from home, isn’t the experience made that much better when you have your favourite snacks on hand?

With the world’s biggest football season just around the corner, there’s no denying we all need a little something to look forward to, especially with the upheaval many of us have been living with in recent months. And nothing combines excitement, community and food more than a large sporting event. What makes it even more fun is that it is yet another opportunity for us to indulge in our favourite junk foods and sugary drinks.

Now that we have your attention, please read on for a list of the best things to fuel the fun and serve your guests next time you’re hosting Game Day at yours:

The 10 Best Snacks to Serve on Game Day!

  1. Hot wings: definitely a sports party must! Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside and best with a side of blue cheese dressing.
  2. Hot dogs: Easy to serve, and be sure to have topping options displayed on the side for guests to choose from.
  3. Dips: whether it’s salsa, guacamole, cheesy dips or tapenades, make at least two of these the night before and store in the fridge until game time. Serve with a side of crackers and a crudité platter.
  4. Sandwiches, tacos and/or burgers: Make or prepare in advance and then have them ready to serve as your guests are just arriving. And be sure to place anything that should be served warm in the oven at least 30 or so minutes before your guests arrive.
  5. Fries, sweet potato fries and/or baked potatoes: Easy enough to make, and serve with your favourite, classic condiments, i.e. ketchup, mustard & mayonnaise.
  6. Onion rings or anything fried for that matter: great accompaniments to pretty much anything you have on the table.
  7. Fried chicken nuggets: because you can’t have enough fried food on Game Day!
  8. Popcorn: Hands down the easiest thing to serve and a definite crowd pleaser!
  9. Chili: A great one-pot treat that is a sure crowd pleaser, easy to make and can literally be made a few minutes ahead of time.
  10. Nachos: Ideally a large, cheesy nacho platter with all your favourite toppings.

Think along the lines of foods that are easy to eat by hand, delicious and affordable. Also, make sure you always have a couple of healthier options on hand, just in case!
