It is mentioned in the previous post that starting early is key, as introducing kids to anything and everything from as young as possible is the best way to avoid tedious eating habits later on. Unfortunately, however, some of us may have missed the memo on this or have children that developed bad eating habits slightly older. Whatever the problem, there are a number of things you can do, and just remember, it is never too late.
Taking from my own experience and having spoken to several mothers with similar problems, I have consolidated a list of tips and tricks to help you Mamas out. See below:
- Avoid putting pressure on your kids to eat as this makes meal time stressful, and believe me, you do not want that negative association.
- Set a time limit for meals. If the food doesn’t get eaten by then, take it away, but don’t get angry.
- Avoid snacks and wait for the next meal time to try again. If your child is hungry, they are more likely to eat something.
- Don’t provide an alternative meal, perhaps a glass of milk or some bread and butter, but don’t go out of your way to make something else.
- Start with small portions, as this is less intimidating to a picky eater.
- Praise your child for trying something new, but don’t overdo it and never bribe them.
- Shop and cook with your children; involve them in the process and make it fun!
- Avoid mentioning that you dislike any food or dish, as kids tend to mimic their parents.
- Though controversial, if you’re desperate, perhaps it’s time to use distractions, such as an iPad or TV. Though this may lead to bad habits later on, but hey, at least you know your child is fed!
- If all else fails, hide the foods you know they need, by pureeing, mincing or using alternatives.
- Lastly, have them select their disliked ingredients on the yufeed app, so when they sit down to a meal, they can relax in the knowledge that none are present, even if you do sneak a little something in!
