Whether I’m hosting a dinner party, brunch or afternoon tea with the girls, I truly revel when deciding on a menu. To this, I’m often met with gasps and dropped jaws. We all know that this part can be stressful, but I’m here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be. I too used to find it quite daunting, but have gotten better over time, mainly because I finally ditched my obsession with perfection, and focussed more on all the fun I could be having instead.
So, contemplate these tips the next time you decide to host something at home:
- Who’s Coming? Consider your guests, what allergies and dietary preferences to consider and work from there.
- Main Dish. Figure out your main course first, and work around that. If you’re opting for something light, like a steamed fish, then pair it with some hearty sides or a filling salad. Whereas if you’re serving a lasagne, or roast beef, consider serving it with something a little lighter to balance everything out.
- Dessert Anyone? Same rule applies – if your meal was on the lighter side; you can afford to be a little indulgent and serve that cheesecake you’ve been wanting to try! If, however, you know your guests will be quite full, then go for something not quite so decadent, so perhaps a fruit platter or maybe some lemon bars?
- Creating a Balance. Consider things like textures, colours, temperatures and flavours. For example, if your main dish is on the richer side, garnish it with some fresh ingredients to lighten the feel, or if the meal is more on the spicy side, be sure to serve something cool for dessert, like some ice cream or a sorbet.
- No Exertions Necessary. Seriously, who are you trying to impress? Choose fool proof dishes that are easy to make and can be prepped in advance, so rather than spending your party in the kitchen, you can sit and mingle with your friends – After all, they are there to see you!
- Less is More. Last, but not least, don’t feel the need to make too many dishes, as they’ll just start to cancel each other out. Choose a number that is reasonable and manageable and you’ll be all set to go.
