Freekeh with Chicken

A hearty and filling dish, paired with yogurt, topped with roasted pine nuts, and flavoured with a rich chicken stock – this is comfort food at its best. Family vibes all around!   

Freekeh with Chicken

Serves : 6
Prep Time : 15 MINUTES
Cooking Time : 30 – 35 MINUTES


  • Freekeh (cracked wheat) – 3 Cups
  • Ghee – 2 tbsp
  • Salt – to taste
  • Water – 4 1/2 Cups
  • Whole Chicken – Pre-cooked and shredded
  • Boiled Chicken & Stock (*)
  • Method

    – Spread the washed freekeh evenly on a large tray for at least 2 hours, until they are complete dry.

    – Heat the oil and ghee in a large pot over medium heat. Add the freekeh and fry for 5 minutes.

    – Pour in the water, season with salt and bring to a boil.

    – Cover with the lid, reduce to a simmer and let the freekeh cook for approximately 30 minutes until the water is mostly absorbed, stirring every 10 minutes.

    – Add the chicken and mix until combined and let sit for an additional 10 minutes for the chicken to heat up.

    – Serve warm with yogurt.
